What if I'm not Healthy Enough (to coach others)?

One of the most common stories I hear from people wanting to study to become a wellness coach is, “I can’t coach people, I’m still working on my own health issue.”

Being a wellness coach isn’t about fixing people (actually that’s the opposite of what coaching is!). Coaching is about helping people see a bigger picture and cultivate a solution-oriented mindset. While the Dr., Naturopath, Dietician, Chiro etc may offer therapies relevant to their background, it’s still coming from one particular angle.

Working with a wellness coach helps the client to investigate a variety of angles, and integrate and hold the information against the benchmark of their goals & ideals, and move forwards accordingly. There is no dogmatic or blind following of instructions. The coach helps the client to gather relevant information and create a step-by-step process that meets the client where they’re at, while steadily integrating new behaviours and protocols as laid out by allied medical professionals.

When you’ve been through something yourself, you’re able to work on a deeper level with clients as it arms you with empathy and the ability to read between the lines with how a client is presenting, and what might be holding them back from moving forwards. A wellness coach isn’t expected to have all the answers, or replace medical professionals. Their role is to create an environment that allows the client to feel confident in their decisions, supported in the process of change, and empowered to transform their health and life.

Have you ever been to a medical professional who was an expert in their field, but seemed to lack a connection with the many facets of what you’re going through?

This is an example of an ‘expert’ level of knowledge not necessarily being the turnkey to healing.

Have you ever been to (let’s use the example of a yoga teacher for ease) a yoga class where the teacher was so expert/established in their physical practice that they were on another level and lacked a connection to their student's needs?

On the contrary, have you ever been to a medical professional who was clearly not in their best state of health, but they were still able to help you?

Part of the magic and beauty of a coach who’s working with a niche they’ve had personal experience with is that they 'get it'.

They have the background experience to help you take all the bits and pieces of info, and help you make sense of it in relation to your unique circumstances, including your mental and emotional state (which is often one of the biggest obstacle to behaviour change).

Ayurvedic Wellness Coaching is a system of skills and knowledge; a modality that anyone can learn. If you have a desire to serve others and positively impact their lives, learn the skill, and trust the process. And don’t allow excuses to hold you back from making a difference in other people’s lives.

Many of my clients are having their biggest shifts and successes right now by working with people in their scope of experience. School teachers, Complex Health Conditions, Front Line Healthcare and Social Workers. People aren't always looking for 'an expert'. Sometimes they're looking for someone who 'gets it’, who has the experience and tools that are uniquely perfect for their often misunderstood situation.

You don't need to have it all figured out to make a difference.

You don't need to be the picture of perfect health, have overcome every challenge, or have all the answers.

You need a willingness to learn, a genuine desire to serve, and the skills to support others with compassion, confidence and integrity.

And sometimes, the very experiences that make you question whether you're ready are the experiences that will make you a good coach.

Our Ayurvedic Wellness Coaching Certification was designed with this in mind.

You'll have the opportunity to work on your own health and wellbeing, experience the coaching process firsthand, and gradually develop the knowledge, practical skills and confidence to support others.

Because becoming a wellness coach isn't about becoming perfect. It's about learning how to facilitate meaningful, sustainable change — in your own life and in the lives of others.
