Bringing Yoga Into Communities Where Access Is Limited

Training local women.
Supporting local leadership. Creating healthier, more connected communities.
A community-led initiative supporting women to become qualified yoga teachers and helping establish sustainable yoga and wellbeing opportunities in regional, rural and underserved communities.
Get InvolvedAccess to yoga asana classes shouldn’t depend on where you live.
Across Australia, there are communities where access to regular yoga, wellbeing programs and qualified teachers is limited or simply doesn’t exist.
Rather than bringing teachers into communities temporarily, we invest in people who are already part of those communities.
Women are supported to undertake professional yoga teacher training, develop the skills and confidence to teach locally, and establish opportunities for people within their own communities to participate in yoga asana and wellbeing classes.
The Impact Model
Access
Making yoga and wellbeing programs available in communities where opportunities are currently limited.
Education
Providing women with access to professional training they may otherwise be unable to undertake.
Leadership
Supporting local women to become teachers, facilitators and wellbeing leaders within their own communities.
Community
Creating ongoing spaces where people can move, connect, learn and participate in wellbeing together.
The goal isn’t simply to create more yoga teachers. It’s to help communities build their own wellbeing infrastructure.
HOW IT WORKS
Our approach is built around long-term community capacity. Rather than bringing yoga into a community temporarily, we invest in local women, local partnerships and local infrastructure so that access can continue to grow from within.
THE STORY BEHIND THE PROJECT
The idea behind this project grew from years of working in yoga education and teacher training, and seeing first-hand how much geography can shape access to yoga.
In larger towns and cities, we can easily take that access for granted. There are yoga studios, community classes, gyms and wellness centres.
There are opportunities to practise, to learn and, for those who feel called to teach, to undertake professional training.
However, across regional, rural and underserved communities, there are places where there may be no local yoga teacher at all, or where classes are limited, inconsistent or dependent on someone travelling into the area.
And when professional teacher training requires significant travel, accommodation or time away from family and work, becoming the local teacher can feel equally out of reach.
Over time, this led us to question how we could make yoga teacher training more accessible with these regions and communities.
There are women living in these communities who care deeply about health, wellbeing and the people around them. Women who already understand their towns, their local networks and the particular needs of the people who live there.
With access to high-quality yoga teacher training, mentoring and practical support, they have the potential to become the teachers and community leaders their own areas need.
That became the foundation of this project. Grant funding provided the opportunity to put the model into action: supporting women from communities with limited access to yoga to undertake professional teacher training, while building the partnerships and local pathways that can help them begin teaching where they live.
The vision extends beyond any single training program or funding round. It is about creating capacity within communities, one teacher, one partnership and one local class at a time.
One local teacher can become the beginning of a broader community impact: regular classes, stronger connections and a community with the capacity to support its own wellbeing.
