Ayurveda and Spring (the perfect time to cleanse)
Sep 04, 2026
There is something I find so beautiful about the way Ayurveda understands nature: nothing exists in isolation; everything moves in cycles, and each stage creates the conditions for what comes next. We see this in the dhatus, through the stages of life, across the hours of the day and, of course, through the seasons. Rather than expecting ourselves to remain the same all year round, Ayurveda asks us to recognise these changing rhythms and learn how to move with them.
Winter has served its purpose. Traditionally, Ayurveda describes winter as a time of stronger digestive capacity, when we can take in more substantial nourishment to sustain and replenish the tissues, while the qualities of rest, conservation and accumulation help us build and restore. At the same time, Kapha gradually accumulates through the colder months and, as the warmth of spring arrives, the classical texts describe this accumulated Kapha beginning to liquefy and move. It's a little like winter snow melting into rivers: when there is space and the pathways are clear, the water can move freely, but when there is excess accumulation or obstruction, we experience congestion and stagnation. Spring therefore brings exactly the qualities we need to begin shifting from winter accumulation into circulation, lightness and renewed energy. (Charaka Samhita, Sutrasthana 6, Ritucharya: seasonal regimen.)
And then, beautifully, spring is not the destination either. Its increasing warmth, movement and activity begin preparing us for summer, just as summer will eventually create the conditions that lead us towards the next seasonal transition. Each season serves a purpose, balancing what came before while preparing us for what comes next, and our Yoga practice, food, routines and ways of caring for ourselves can move within that rhythm to support a life of greater balance and harmony with nature.
This is one of the things I love most about Ayurveda: it gives us practical ways to reconnect with nature and live in a wholesome, aligned manner, even when we're living in the city or juggling a busy modern life. We don't need to live with the same energy, eat the same foods or practise in exactly the same way every month of the year; we can notice the season we're in, appreciate what it has given us, let go of what we no longer need and ride the changing waves of nature rather than continually trying to swim against them.
To put this seasonal wisdom into practice, I’d love you to join me and the Live to Serve community for our free 7-Day Ayurvedic Yoga Cleanse. It’s a simple, sustainable way to support the transition from winter accumulation into spring lightness and renewed energy, using a few foundational Ayurvedic practices to strengthen digestion, restore daily rhythms and gently clear some of the heaviness and stagnation we may be carrying from winter, without extreme fasting, complicated protocols or adding another overwhelming project to your life.
With love and well wishes,
