The Opposite Is Often the Remedy

Ayurvedic Wellness Coaching

Ayurveda teaches us that imbalance has a pull of its own. Vata craves stimulation, Pitta craves more fire, and Kapha craves stillness. But the path back to balance usually isn’t more of the same. It’s the opposite.

That’s why in Ayurveda, the remedy is often the exact opposite of what you feel like doing.

This can feel uncomfortable at first. When we’re trying to find our way back to balance, we need to moderate our expectations of how it will feel. Often, it’s not what you want to do, or even what you enjoy doing. But if you truly want change you don’t have to like it... but you do have to do it.

Think of it like taking bitter herbs. Not pleasant, but effective.

A Few Everyday Examples

  • Vata imbalance: You might feel restless and scattered, craving more movement, socialising, or stimulation. The remedy? Stillness, routine, grounding foods, early nights. Probably the last thing you feel like doing, but exactly what restores calm.
  • Pitta imbalance: Overworked, overheated, and driven, Pitta often craves more achievement and intensity — pushing through another project or another workout. The remedy? Cooling practices, rest, time in nature, and letting go of the need to “win.”
  • Kapha imbalance: Heavy, lethargic, unmotivated. Kapha will crave more comfort and stillness. The remedy? Getting up, moving the body, stimulating practices, lighter foods. Even when inertia makes that feel impossible.

Following through on what balances us, even when it’s not what we feel like, is also powerful mental training. It builds discipline, strengthens impulse control, and reminds us that we’re not slaves to our cravings or moods.
