Is Yoga Teacher Training Right for You?

Jun 07, 2026

Every enrolment season, I speak with people who are curious about yoga teacher training but aren't quite sure if they're the "right fit."

They've been thinking about it for months; sometimes years.

They download the brochure. They watch a few videos. They follow along quietly on social media.

And then they send a message that starts with one of these sentences:

"I'm not sure if I'm ready."

"I don't actually want to teach."

"I'm not flexible enough."

"I think I'm too old."

"I'm not spiritual enough."

If you've ever thought any of these things, you're not alone.

In fact, I'd say they're some of the most common concerns people have before enrolling.

So let's talk about them.

"I Don't Want to Teach"

This is probably the biggest misconception about yoga teacher training.

Many people assume yoga teacher training is only for people who want to quit their job, roll out a yoga mat, and start teaching classes immediately.

But did you know that a large percentage of students begin their training for entirely personal reasons.

They want to deepen their understanding of yoga.

They want to improve their health.

They want to learn about the body.

They want to understand meditation, philosophy, pranayama, Ayurveda, or holistic living. They know there’s ‘more’ to life and their humna body and their keen to explore the yogic path.

Some are navigating major life transitions and looking for wisdom and practical tools for support. Others are simply feeling called to learn, grow, and explore something that has been pulling at their heart for years.

Many discover a love for teaching during the course. Others never teach professionally at all.

Both paths are perfectly valid.

Yoga teacher training is an educational experience first and a professional qualification second.

The question isn't "Do I want to teach?"

The question is "Do I want to learn?"

"I'm Too Old"

I hear this one all the time!

The funny thing is that yoga isn't some kind of sport reserved for the young.

Traditional yoga has always been about self-inquiry, self-development, relationships, and our Higher Purpose.

Many of our students begin training in their 40s, 50s, and 60s.

In fact, life experience often becomes one of their greatest strengths.

They've raised families.

They've built careers.

They've navigated challenges.

They've accumulated wisdom that younger students are often still discovering.

Some are entering a completely new chapter after years of caring for everyone else.

For many women, yoga teacher training becomes the first thing they've done purely for themselves in a very long time.

Age is rarely the obstacle people think it is.

More often, it's self-doubt wearing a disguise.

"I'm Not Flexible"

You don't need to be.

Yoga teacher training is not an advanced gymnastics course, a competition, nor is it a flexibility contest.

One of the biggest misconceptions about yoga is that it is primarily about physical postures.

The postures, or asana, are certainly valuable. They help develop strength, mobility, body awareness, resilience, and health. They can help prepare the body and steady the mind for meditation and the higher rungs of the yoga system.

But in the traditional yoga system, asana is only one aspect of a much larger path.

A person can touch their toes and still know very little about yoga.

Likewise, a person may have limited mobility and yet possess deep wisdom, compassion, self-awareness, devotion, and spiritual understanding.

In the classical yoga traditions, the ultimate aim of yoga is not mastering difficult poses. It is union between the atman (individual soul) and Paramatma (Supreme Soul); the cultivation of a loving relationship with the Supreme Soul, and the rediscovery of our true nature beyond the temporary body and mind.

The practices of yoga, including asana, breathwork, meditation, self-study, and service, are all designed to help us move toward that state of greater self-awareness and loving union.

This means that your ability to perform advanced postures has very little to do with your ability to study yoga.

Some of the best yoga teachers I've met are not the most flexible people in the room.

What they do have is curiosity, humility, compassion, and a sincere desire to learn and serve.

You don't need a handstand.

You don't need the splits.

You don't need to look a certain way.

You simply need a willingness to show up, learn, and explore what yoga truly has to offer.

"I'm Not Spiritual Enough"

This concern often comes from a misunderstanding of what spirituality actually means.

Many people imagine they need to know fluent Sanskrit, living a perfectly sattvic life, or meditating for hours every day before they can study yoga.

Actually, yoga teacher training is often where many people first begin exploring these concepts.

It is a place to learn, ask questions and develop your understanding.

You are not expected to arrive with all the answers.

In fact, one of the joys of studying yoga is discovering just how much there is to learn.

Whether you're deeply spiritual, mildly curious, or simply interested in holistic health, there is a place for you within the study of yoga.

"I'm Not Ready"

This is usually the real concern.

Not flexibility, age, teaching or spirituality.

It’s readiness.

The challenge is that readiness is a moving target.

Most people imagine that one day they will wake up feeling completely confident, fully prepared, and absolutely certain.

As with most things in life, that day rarely comes.

Confidence is not usually what comes first.

Action comes first and confidence follows.

Every graduate I've ever worked with began as a beginner.

Every experienced teacher was once nervous (I still get nervous when I teach!).

Every practitioner started with questions.

Nobody begins feeling ready, confident, put together, able, or anywhere near an expert.

The training itself is what helps build confidence.

The training itself is what creates readiness.
And the support offering throughout the training to help you practice and gain experience while being offering guidance is what helps you to slowly and steadily start to feel ready and able.

The Real Transformation

People often enroll expecting to learn about the system and practices of yoga.

And they do.

They learn anatomy, philosophy, teaching methodology, sequencing, pranayama, meditation, and much more.

But the deeper transformation is often unexpected.

They create healthier habits.

They find community.

They reconnect with parts of themselves that have been neglected for years.

They discover a deeper understanding of themselves, relationships and life in general.

Some go on to teach.

Some create wellness businesses.

Some integrate yoga into existing careers.

Some simply become healthier, happier, and more grounded human beings.

All of these outcomes are valuable.

Because ultimately, yoga teacher training is not just about becoming a yoga teacher.

It's about becoming a more conscious participant in your own life.

So, Is Yoga Teacher Training Right for You?

If you're curious, willing to learn, and are feeling drawn to studying yoga more deeply, it might be.

You don't need to be flexible.

You don't need to be young.

You don't need to be spiritual.

You don't even need to want to teach.

You simply need a willingness to start the journey.

Sometimes the most meaningful changes in our lives start with a simple decision:

To stop waiting for the perfect time and simply take the first step forward.

If you've been thinking about yoga teacher training for a while, perhaps this is your moment to explore what's possible.
